The Story Behind the Lens

For more than 30 years, I've been drawn to the stories unfolding around us—whether in the wild, in our backyards, or in moments most people never notice. Through patience, observation, and a deep love of the natural world, I've spent countless hours waiting for those rare moments when a story comes into focus.

Where life exists… stories happen!

I want to share glimpses into the lives unfolding all around us. Each image is a peek into another world, another story. No single story tells the whole book of life—through this collection, I hope to capture more chapters for you to read.

I’ve been making fine art photography for 30 years, with work featured on National Geographic’s Daily Dozen and in Virginia Wildlife Magazine. Sometimes I’ll sit in the same spot for days, weeks, even years, just waiting for that one perfect moment. I want to bring those moments to you, so we can marvel together at the little details and the uniqueness each living creature brings.

My Methods

I use Photoshop much like a traditional darkroom— dodging, burning, and shaping light, tone, and color to bring my stories to life. Of my more than 230 pieces, only one includes a subject that’s been digitally moved (a particularly cooperative chicken), and just two are composites of multiple photographs. The exception is the self-portrait shown here, created from photographs I've made over many years. It represents how I imagine myself: surrounded by stories, animals, and the moments that inspire my work.

Whether working with a composite or a single photograph, my goal is not to create a different reality, but to better express the one I experienced—emphasizing the light, mood, and subject the way they felt in that moment. Occasionally, I’ll add a bit of texture to add extra interest or feeling, but the story is in the work, textures only highlight it. In all my other work, I remain faithful to what was before me—shaping light and tone, but never the truth of the scene.
